By the time Alex reached the fifth floor, he really wished he’d taken the elevator. Panting from the exertion, he pushed open the stairwell door and made his way to the area reserved for division five.
“Danny, I need you to come with me to the morgue,” he said when he reached his friend’s desk. Danny Pak was seated behind a stack of paperwork with a pen in one hand and a blotter in the other. He looked up as Alex spoke; his eyes were bloodshot with dark circles under them.
“What?” he said, taking a moment to process what Alex said. “Why?”
“Because June Masterson didn’t kill Hugo Ayers of her own will.”
“What?” Danny demanded, more forcefully this time.
“Someone forced her to do it,” Alex went on. “I think they used magic, but they might have drugged her or used hypnosis, I don’t know. That’s why I need to examine her body again.”
Danny just sat, looking at him for a long moment.
“Someone forced her to kill her lover with magic?” he said. “Do you have any idea how crazy that sounds?”
Alex picked up the file that was still sitting on the corner of Alex’s desk and pulled out the envelope with the list of items taken from June’s handbag.
“Look here,” Alex said, putting the list down on top of Danny’s paperwork and pointing to one particular item.
“One clean handkerchief,” Danny read. “So?”
“Think about it,” Alex said. “If you were on your way to murder someone you had been sleeping with, would you be calm?”
“Probably not,” Danny admitted. “What’s that got to do with a handkerchief?”
“It’s clean,” Alex said. “Don’t you think she would have shed a tear or two on her way to violently murder a man she had feelings for?”
“Maybe this is her backup handkerchief,” Danny said, pointing to the list.
“There’s one way to be sure,” Alex said with a sly grin.
“Let me guess,” Danny said. “Go over to the morgue and look at June’s body?”
“Even if they cleaned her up, I should be able to see if her makeup ran using silverlight,” Alex said.
“Maybe she wasn’t wearing any,” Danny suggested.
Alex shook his head at that.
“A nice, mid-ring housewife? Of course she was wearing makeup.”
“So why do you need me?” Danny said with a resigned sigh.
“Have you met the new coroner?”
“No.”
“Well I have, and he doesn’t like me.”
Danny just looked at Alex, shaking his head.
“You know,” he said in an admonishing voice, “you might try being nice to people.”
“Who’s got time for that?” Alex said with a laugh.
“All right,” Danny said, putting his pen back in his pocket. “I’ll get my coat, but you’re really going to owe me for this.”
“You know I’m good for it,” Alex said.
